What's it like to be an Explorations Student? It is like being a pumpkin!
Gail picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the failure off of you. Then she cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff. She removes the seeds of doubt, hate and laziness. Then she carves you a new smiling face and puts education inside of you to shine for all the world to see!

The last time I have ever been bullied was freshman year. It is not right to be bullied, and it hurts very much. This incident occurred during baseball season in school. There was this kid who took being the team captain way too far. He told everybody what to do and when to do it. One day, on the way to an away game, he was telling me and the other kids to slap some kid's butt and, if it wasn't done, he would go around and tell everyone you're gay. He also proceeded to say that I sucked at baseball and I shouldn't deserve to talk. This situation got worse and almost go the high school baseball team to be disqualified and disbanded. The principal was notified about the incident, but no actions were taken, so it went to the superintendant. He made a meeting between my family and the bully's. The bully ended up not being able to play one game and lost his Captain position. Some punishment! This is also the reason why I went to EXPLORATIONS. Since the incident, everything has been fine. My new school was like a home to me for a while - everyone was nice and the teachers are great. They will be greatly missed when I move. Thanks for making this new school a 'bully-free zone.'

My husband and I could not be happier with the schooling process at Explorations. We have two children who attend and they are so different in personality and learning style and yet the school fits them perfectly. They are very happy in their school and cannot wait to go each day. They have been exposed to different types of school and the administration and teachers at Explorations hold each one of them accountable for their own work and provide caring support when and if needed always.

As a parent, I made a choice to send my child to Explorations for a variety of reasons. They would be able to give my child a rigorous education, while providing my child with the neighborhood school feel. The principal there is a true visionary that instills in all the students a sense of responsibility and self discipline. I met many students who made a choice to attend Explorations, some students attended because they were disillusioned with their local high schools, some went because they felt there is more of an acceptance for individual differences, some because they felt the education was more personalized to their learning styles and some went because of the Adventure Education programs and work study programs that are truly unique in the way the services are delivered. Whatever their reasons the students made a choice to be there, they could leave at any juncture but if they want to stay at the school they must meet the schools standards or they are returned to their local schools. I, as a proud graduate of this fine institution, take pride and boast about the challenging, exciting and new approach I was provided at Explorations School. Not only did I grow intellectually, I learned the importance of the application of education in the workforce. I also realized how necessary self discipline is. Rather than attending a public high school and being desk fill in the blank on a seating chart, your are recognized as a unique individual with valuable opinions. This school provides youth with an abundance of potential and possibility given that this person is willing to work hard and dream large.

I give this school a five star rating. I currently have a son who attends Explorations and is doing very well. I also have a son with a disability who graduated from Explorations after failing in every other public school. The staff are very caring and treat the students as individuals with different needs. I truly believe that if it was not for the staff at this wonderful school neither one of the boys would graduate. Submitted by a parent on March 26, 2008.
