Our Juniors and Seniors had a blast biking Torrington's Rails to Trails, Canoeing out on Canaan's Twin Lakes, and fishing and telling Tall Tales at Stratton Brook in Simsbury.
We are off and on the way to a great school year! Our cornerstone program begins tomorrow! Adventure Education! Juniors and Seniors have a blast biking, kayaking, and fishing!
Explorations is participating in Northwest Corner Gives July 1 - July 22.
Help us reach our goal to fund the replacement of computers that are no longer able to be updated to support dual (college) enrollment opportunities, STEAM, and digital art classes at northwestcornergives.org, an online giving platform created by the Northwest CT Community Foundation (@yournccf) to help us build awareness and raise matching funds.

Explorations Charter School Receives Grant from the Draper Fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation to Expand Friday Adventure Ed and Enrichment Activities
WINSTED, CT — June 30, 2026 — Explorations Charter School announced today that it has received a $16,450 grant from the Draper Fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation to expand its Friday Adventure Education and Enrichment Activities program. The funding will allow the school to broaden access to hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for students.
Explorations Charter School’s Friday program is built around the belief that learning extends beyond the traditional classroom. Each week, students take part in outdoor expeditions, project-based workshops, and community-based enrichment activities designed to build confidence, collaboration, and real-world skills alongside academic growth.
With support from the Draper grant, the school will expand its Adventure Ed offerings and add new maker space equipment and tools, giving students the chance to challenge themselves outdoors while also exploring hands-on creative and design projects. The expansion comes as Explorations Charter School celebrates its 30th year of providing a supportive learning environment and caring community for students.
“The support of the Draper Fund of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation means so much to our school. As we enter our 30th year, we continue to provide a supportive learning environment, a caring community, and opportunities for students to challenge themselves through our Adventure Ed Program. Additionally, adding maker space equipment and tools gives students the chance to expand their creative potential,” said Jill Johnson, Executive Director of Explorations Charter School.
This grant reflects the continued commitment of the Draper Fund, administered through the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation, to supporting innovative, student-centered education models that prioritize experiential learning.
Explorations Charter School plans to roll out the expanded Friday Adventure Ed programming beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.

Everyone had a great time playing volleyball, kayaking, hiking, eating, and just lounging around on the beach. A great way to roll into the last week of school and summer vacation!
